Joel N. Jacobson has been a member of the firm for more than thirty-five years and a member of the firm's Management Committee since 1987. His practice includes financial services, creditors’ rights, real estate and business matters.
Joel’s financial services practice focuses on creditors’ rights matters, including workouts, foreclosures, bankruptcies and commercial litigation arising from bank loans. As part of this practice, Joel regularly represents many financial institutions in connection with a wide variety of non-performing mortgage and other commercial loans, including loans secured by development projects, office and industrial buildings, shopping centers, accounts receivables, inventory and equipment. Joel has also represented financial institutions and purchasers in connection with the sale and purchase of non-performing loans.
Joel’s real estate clients include financial institutions, developers, investors and operating businesses. As part of his representation of financial institutions, Joel has handled hundreds of sales of owned real estate, including many complex transactions involving joint ventures, projects under construction, hotels, health care facilities, golf courses, parking lots, offices and industrial buildings and vacant land. As part of his representation of other real estate clients, Joel represents owners and managers of commercial properties in connection with acquisition, sale and lease transactions and a nationwide hotel developer and large NJ and NY fast-food franchisee with respect to new development projects and the management of existing properties.
In the area of business law, Joel has served as counsel to many closely-held companies in a broad range of industries, including manufacturing, retail, fuel oil distribution, restaurants, construction and technology. As part of such representation, he has handled many purchases and sales of businesses, ownership disputes and franchise matters.
Joel has been named the “Newark Area Best Lawyers Banking Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. He is the only banking law attorney accorded this honor in the State of New Jersey. Joel is also listed in the Banking Law section of the current issue of The Best Lawyers In America. He was also named by Real Estate New Jersey magazine as one of the state’s top real estate attorneys. Joel has received Martindale-Hubbell's AV Preeminent rating, its highest lawyer rating, which serves as an objective indicator of a lawyer's high ethical standards and legal knowledge. Joel has been the primary contact for Meritas, a worldwide affiliation of more than 170 law firms, since the firm became a member in 1991.
