As you may recall, we wrote late last month that Pennsylvania’s first licensed medical marijuana dispensary opened in the Lehigh Valley and expected to have products for sale by February or March of 2018. In the following weeks, a number of dispensaries throughout the state have opened or announced their openings in the near future. And now, courtesy of Governor Wolf, we have perhaps the biggest announcement of all: medical marijuana will be available at certain Pennsylvania dispensaries starting this week. By the end of this weekend, medical marijuana will be available at certain dispensaries in Allegheny, Bucks, Butler, Chester, Cumberland, and Northampton Counties.
To date, more than 17,000 individuals have registered with the state to become approved for medical marijuana, nearly 4,000 of which have been certified by approved physicians. Nearly 400 physicians have been approved to certify patients for medical marijuana, and the state has sought more doctors to register for the program.
With more licensed dispensaries set to open throughout Pennsylvania in the coming weeks and months, employers must be prepared to deal with the numerous issues relating to medical marijuana in the workplace.
